'Shaun the Sheep and Friends' enter 'Scrapheap Challenge'
A production of the 'Beyond the Box' Special Interest Group
Sponsored by Little-cars

Let's start at the beginning. This is a hobby, and a hobby should be fun ... So, I suppose when a few of my fellow modellers suggested something silly whilst attending SMW 2005, I sort of agreed to be their leader (what do they say in the military, never volunteer?), ah well someone's got to!

Anyway, long story short, we formed the 'Beyond the Box' SIG, a bunch of like minded loonies all in one pot, so you can imagine what sort of crazy schemes we're going to come up with. In 2006 we had the very successful 'Anti-Pesto' build where we used the Airfix A35 Van and figures from the Aardman film, 'Curse of the Were-Rabbit', resulting in over 30 unique converted models and figures. In 2007, we had the 'Wacky Racers' build, unfortunately not as successful, but a lot of fun never the less.

2008 saw the return of 'Wallace & Gromit', this time the theme was 'At the Movies' , again attracting over 30 amazing entries.

In 2009, we're keeping within the theme of the Aardman characters, but this time, it's Shaun the Sheep and Friends enter 'Scrapheap Challenge' . If you have not watched the Channel 4 series over the past 10 years, here's a brief scenario of what it's all about. Two teams, together with an expert, are given just 10 hours to produce a useful item from a given theme out of scrap. There have been many challenges including a bridge layer, fire boat, missile launcher, steam powered vehicle and a submarine.

If you think that you can come up with a bodgetastic machine based on the vehicles from the Airfix range of Aardman kits, we need your involvement to make this build the best yet. The build will start on December 25th 2008 and run until the weekend of SMW 2009. All models will be displayed at SMW 2009 on the 'Beyond the Box' SIG table(s). If you would like to join in this lunacy, there are a couple of rules which have to be observed, yes, there have to be rules.

  • (1) Because of the possible complexity of the proposed build, the model may be your own work or a joint effort by two or more members of the 'Beyond the Box' SIG.

  • (2) You or your team may produce up to 5 builds for the display.

  • (3) The themed scenario(s) may be taken from any programme of the television series of 'Scrapheap Challenge' or a new scenario may be introduced. As in the television series, your nominated team must be given a name and be shown wearing all appropriate safety equipment to include (overalls, hard hats, eye protection, gloves, etc.)

  • (4) The vehicle(s) featured in the build should be from the Airfix series of Aardman kits.

  • (5) The figure(s) featured in the build may be taken from the Airfix range of Aardman kits and either used in their original form, modified or scratchbuilt to fit into your chosen theme.

  • (6) Enjoy the experience.

Rule Addition - Due to proposed constraints on table space allocation by the SMW manager for 2009, and to ensure that we use the space we have to the best advantage, the maximum base size for exhibits for 'Scrapheap Challenge' will be 16 x 12.

I'll need your IPMS number, the scenario you've chosen, a name for your team and your email address. So, come on, registration for the build is free, it doesn't cost anything to join the SIG and if the past builds are anything to go by, you'll have a lot of fun building the contraptions as well as enjoying the reactions of the visitors at SMW 2009. So, let's have those registrations and we'll hopefully produce another stunning display.

Oh, and if you need a bit of reference material, have a look at this link to
