Airfix
SIG
It is our great pleasure to formally announce the creation
of the IPMS (UK) Airfix Modelling SIG. It has taken
considerable planning and effort from a team of dedicated
Airfix enthusiasts, but it has been enjoyable and
worthwhile! We look forward to welcoming many new members
and meeting and seeing everyone at the shows throughout the
year.
2009 is an
anniversary year for Airfix, marking 70 years of the
companies foundation, and 60 years since the manufacture of
the first model kit - the Ferguson Tractor. Airfix is an
icon of the British model world and is synonymous with model
kits, introducing many innovative ideas and designs,
including constant scale kits throughout its rich
history.
Airfix has always
attracted a loyal following, first through the Airfix
Magazine, and later the Airfix Club - unique amongst model
kit manufacturers. With the advent of the Internet, new
avenues have been opened up including websites and forums,
enabling many more people to discuss and share their passion
for Airfix on a daily basis. One of these is the Airfix
Tribute Forum, which has been successfully growing and
expanding in membership for the last three years. Through
events and meetings of the members at various outings and
model shows, including Scale Model World, a concept was
formed to bring together the enthusiasm and passion for
Airfix into a new group under the auspices of the
International Plastic Modellers Society (UK). The idea of
the Airfix Modelling Special Interest Group was
conceived.
The intention was
to form a group, open to all, whatever their age, sex, race,
modelling ability, who have a common enthusiasm for Airfix
models. This can take the form of modelling, collecting, the
history of the brand and company, or just discussing Airfix
models. Following several months of planning and hard work
by a dedicated team of volunteers, our application to the
IPMS (UK) was accepted, and the IPMS (UK) Airfix Modelling
Special Interest Group was officially launched February
2009.
The team have a
number of aims for the first year; to attend a number of
model shows throughout the year, to put on a display marking
the Airfix Anniversary at Scale Model World 2009, to
construct and expand the SIG website and discussion forum,
to attract as many new members as possible and spread the
word about the SIG.
To achieve this we
have very dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who are
determined, through teamwork and joint collaboration (and
hard work!), to make a success of the SIG. However, a SIG is
only as strong as the members, so we urge anyone with an
interest in Airfix to get involved and have some
FUN!
